Winnipeg National Bank Challenger Attracts past Wimbledon
Quarter-Finalist Bernard Tomic
WINNIPEG, MB – Bernard Tomic will be the top seeded player coming to Winnipeg in two weeks for the $54,000 Winnipeg National Bank Challenger (WNBC) presented by M Builds. The men’s professional ATP tournament is the fourth largest in Canada following the Rogers Cup. The event runs July 8-14 at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club (WLTC).
Tomic is a former top 20 player who was a quarter finalist at Wimbledon and a controversial figure on the tour. In 2018, he was a contestant on the Austrailian version of “I’m a celebrity…..Get me out of here” before he dropped out of the show to continue playing tennis. Along with Tomic is last year’s WNBC semi-finalist, former top 20 player Marcel Granollers. Other anticipated players are Canadians Brayden Schnur, Filip Peliwo and Peter Polansky. Early this season, Schnur had a remarkable run at the New York Open losing in the Finals but posting a career high ranking of 107.
“We really enjoyed having Marcel Granollers and such a strong Canadian contingent last year. Marcel and his brother Gerard are really strong doubles teammates and played an exciting if not hotly contested doubles final here,” said Mark Arndt, founder and tournament operator of the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger.
“This tournament continues to draw amazing players from around the world that are hungry to either fight their way back into Grand Slam tournaments or are young and determined to get there for the first time. They play a tournament like ours more for the ATP points than the prize purse which is what makes it exciting,” said Arndt.
